Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is the most effective non-drug treatment for insomnia. CBT-I is effective as both a short-term and long-term treatment for insomnia.
The therapy combines both cognitive (thinking) and behavioural (behaviour and actions) principles to give clients/participants insight and understanding into thoughts that help the maintenance of sleep problems, and to teach behavioural techniques that improve the quality of sleep. CBT-I helps clients/participants develop the skills and strategies needed to become healthy and improve sleep quality.
Clients/participants develop the ability to recognize and change their thoughts, behaviours or actions that may be causing them difficulty going to sleep.
The CBT-I treatment is given in five short 1 hour sessions. The sessions are face-to-face at the University of Calgary or online.
